Globalization, People and Democracy

Teacher(s): Emmanuel Kamwi

Lessons: 4/week

Today, with the increased interdependence and interactions of people across the globe, actions by a government on the other side of the globe could have an impact on ordinary people at local level on the far opposite side of the globe and vice-versa. Governments in this era of globalization have to copy with not only being accountable and responsive to their own citizens they also have to copy with increased influence and interference by global actors such as transnational social movements, activists, institutions and corporations in the governing of their respective countries.

During this Folk High School Globalization, People and Democracy Class, students shall gain an understanding on how “Global” (transnational) norms and values are transferred at local level and how such foreign norms and values influence people’s choices and policy making at local level.

Topics to be covered in this course include, i) Understanding globalization and glocalization; ii) Understanding the influence of social media on politics, governance and people’s choices; iii) Global regimes and transnational norms and values; and iv) Social justice, accountability and transnational networks.
