Meet Javier García at IPC: Film Screening and introduction, Saturio, el último fusilado

Join us for a special screening of the Colombian film Saturio, el último fusilado (2020), presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Colombia. The screening will be introduced by the film’s director and screenwriter, Javier García, who will also join us for a Q&A following the film.

About the film

Saturio, el último fusilado tells the story of Manuel Saturio Valencia, an Afro-Colombian poet, teacher, lawyer, and community leader from the Chocó region.

Set in Quibdó in 1907, the film follows Saturio’s extraordinary rise from poverty to becoming a prominent leader of the Black communities in the region. Accused of setting a fire in Quibdó, he was sentenced to death after a remarkably short trial and became the last person to be legally executed by firing squad in Colombia.

Through a combination of historical drama and documentary storytelling, director Javier García brings Saturio’s story back to the screen, exploring racism, justice, identity, and Afro-Colombian historical memory.

Javier García is a Colombian filmmaker and the director and screenwriter of Saturio, el último fusilado. His work focuses on Colombian history and Afro-Colombian memory, bringing stories that have long been preserved through oral tradition to a wider audience.
