This Academic English Class is designed to prepare you for your Academic Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening challenges.

Unlike in general English, when you often simply have to understand the general meaning or just remember what you heard or read, at the academic level you are supposed to do much more than this. By the end of the course you should be able to:

• Identify features of academic writing and speaking
• Take effective notes and paraphrase from sources
• Express a personal and critical point of view
• Organise ideas within a paragraph
• Structure an academic text

We will listen to lectures, read texts, learn skills for understanding these texts, and develop written and spoken responses to them. You will learn how to build your argument both on paper and in speech. And most importantly you will adopt critical thinking approach: distinguish fact from opinion, main idea from supporting evidence, bias and manipulation from expertise, etc.
