Youth Studies

Teacher(s): Susan Nyatanga

Lessons: 4/week

Youth Studies focuses on developing an understanding of young people’s experiences and life contexts in a fast, changing, global world. What exactly is impacting on youths from psychological, sociological and technological areas. The subject teaching is primarily based on discussions of life situations, cases and debating on these challenges. Most of the topics under discussion will be suggested by the students themselves and will also include alcohol and drug abuse, upbringing, sexuality, dating, cybersex, addictions, fears- in general we analyse youth issues and problems faced in real life situations.

How do we do it?

  • Videos, Documentaries and discussing the themes portrayed as well as linking them to our experiences
  • Debating after scenarios presented
  • Presenting based on your own background/ experiences
  • Assessing, understanding, reflecting, reacting and criticizing research findings as well as documentaries linked to topic under discussion.
This subject is not heavily academic- more general discussions. However, it requires that students are willing to share opinions and experiences, are active and participate in class as well as appreciate diversity and other people’s ways of approaching life. Method:
Lecture, internet research, discussion groups, videos, music and audio material
