Lessons: 4/week
This Folk High School Stagecraft Class is designed to teach students about the fundamentals of working behind the scenes. Many people are interested in helping out in the theatre but do not want to be on stage. They don’t realize that there are many other things they can do. In this class, students will learn about the art (and science) of working backstage. Students can sign up for this class as a “stand-alone” or as part of the Theatre Production ensemble. All interested students arewelcome. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary.
Throughout our weekly Folk High School class sessions, students will gain theoretical and applied knowledge in the following areas: Theatre Anatomy, Theater Etiquette, Lighting and Sound Design, Light/Sound Board Operation, Set Design and Construction, Costume Design and Construction, Theatre Makeup Basics, Basic Knot-tying and Fly System Operation, and the Duties of a Theatre Stagehand.
In this Folk High School Stagecraft Class, lectures and textual materials will be supported by hands-on experience designing and constructing the set, costumes, lighting and sound for that term’s Theatre Production. Please note that, in addition to our weekly class sessions, students are also required to attend a full cast and crew “read through” of the script as well as two mandatory full-day workshops in preparation for the opening of the Theatre Production. In addition, those interested in gaining Stagehand experience are also required to attend all rehearsals during Creative Days end-of-term as well as all performances.
