European Studies: Understanding Europe

Europe is fascinating, diverse and complex. Exciting! In this Folk High School Understanding Europe Class you will be introduced to key themes and issues in European culture, history, politics and society.

You will enjoy a bird’s-eye view of major trends in social and cultural contexts. We will analyze European trends in food, fashion, visual arts, literature, music, cinema, architecture and design, and we will discuss how artworks and cultural trends are influenced by history and politics.

We will also discuss from a critical point of view Europe’s problems and challenges and how Europe’s culture, history and politics have influenced and still influence other cultures and regions in the world.

You will be able to appreciate, understand and enjoy the fascinating diversity and complexity of Europe from a cultural, historical, social, and political point of view.
