This Folk High School Religion and Culture Class is about examining the concept of religion as culture, being the product of human activity. We are trying to understand why human beings invented religion, and what impact this invention has had on the human mind, human society, while tracing the effects of religion in the ideas that has been the foundation of the world.
Using four distinctly different approaches we will look at religion through the theories of George Bataille (surreal philosophy), Claude Levi-Strauss (structural theory), Sigmund Freud (psychoanalysis) and Rene Girard (fundamental anthropology).
Religion matters to so many people, it is undeniable, and we are trying to find out what religion does rather than “what it is”!
